Vintage Murano Glass Palm Tree Lamps From Barovier & Toso Lead Akiba Antiques’ September Sale
One of the oldest family-owned businesses in the world, Italian glassmaker Barovier & Toso was founded in 1295. It maintains a long tradition of Murano glassmaking while pioneering new styles and techniques, including craquelé and vetro a ghiaccio, respectively craquelure and “ice” glass. The company has sustained itself by balancing tradition and innovation in the modern world. Akiba Antiques’ upcoming Blast From The Past auction will particularly feature a pair of Barovier & Toso Murano glass floor lamps. Dating back to the 1980s or 90s, these whimsical lamps resemble pale white palm trees. Each electrified lamp rests on a brass foundation.
Another notable lot in the catalog is a possibly ancient bronze Corinthian-type helmet from the Mediterranean region. Designed for the ancient Greek citizen-soldiers known as hoplites, this Corinthian helmet would have provided near-complete protection for the head. However, its design compromised the hoplite’s peripheral vision and hearing, making it most suitable for use in a phalanx battle formation. Beyond antique collectibles, the sale also includes a selection of Chinese porcelain vases, vintage gold jewelry from brands such as Baume & Mercier, and Viennese miniature clocks.
