Xuande Porcelain, Pavel Akimov Ovchinnikov Golden Egg, and Jul Hügler Jewelry at Akiba Antiques
Usually, Xuande porcelain can be recognized by its strong cobalt blue decoration on a creamy white background. But the leading lot in Akiba Antiques’ Lavisher’s Luxuries auction is a Xuande bronze piece with real gold glaze. This antique gold-splashed patinated bronze vase is from the late 18th to early 19th century. The vase has double Qiulong “curling dragon” handles, a tapered neck, and a slightly flared rim. The vase also has the highly recognized six-character Xuande mark. Another available 19th-century treasure comes from the Russian goldsmith and silversmith Pavel Akimov Ovchinnikov. The egg is double-headed silver cloisonné that features a heavily detailed silver foundation decorated with scrolling floral and foliate motifs. Once a slave, Ovchinnikov was set free because of his skills in making jewelry.
A pair of vintage Jul Hügler earrings is also available in the auction. The coral drop earrings are carved and set in 18-karat gold with floral vine designs. It is an early 20th-century pair that comes with its original box. The Austrian jewelry brand belonged to Julius Hügler, who supplied the Habsburg dynasty with jewels and valuables. The brand received international recognition at the legendary Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriel Modernes in Paris in 1925 when it won the Medal d’Or for its innovative aesthetics.
